NRW Unveils Strategy for Enhanced Energy Storage

2025-01-17
North Rhine-Westphalia advances energy storage with hydrogen, battery, and thermal systems to ensure supply security and climate neutrality by becoming Europe’s first climate-neutral industrial region.

Primed with a revolutionary approach to energy storage, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is making strides in the sustainable energy sector. The NRW Ministry of Economy and Energy recently unveiled a robust strategy to conserve surplus energy rather than letting it lay waste.

This energy storage plan articulates cardinal steps and measures, facilitating the adaption of an expansive array of energy storage systems. The future's energy grid will depend on both electric and heat storage for a multitude of applications. A special emphasis is laid on the refinement of long-term storage systems. Given the technical suitability and the deployment of hydrogen in power stations, the construction of hydrogen storage is particularly necessary. This requires the establishment of appropriate framework conditions and an appealing financing framework in the near term.

The energy storage concept envisages encompassing all significant forms of storage: from short-term electric storage to long-term solutions like hydrogen.

Major Initiatives for Storage Expansion in NRW:

  • Advocacy for reliable investment framework conditions, particularly by reducing regulatory obstacles;
  • Fortifying storage business models and advancing market design;
  • Advocacy for technology-neutral expansion of storage technologies and their systemic appreciation as an essential component of the future energy supply system;
  • Identification of intertwined relations within the related action fields of the comprehensive transformation process in the electricity, gas, and heat sector;
  • Supporting expansion by utilizing all potential accelerants at planning, approval, and subsequent processes;
  • Improved framework conditions for future-proof advancement of gas storage capacities in the direction of hydrogen and the new construction of hydrogen storage

Mona Neubaur, the Minister of Economy and Energy, shared her view, “Energy storage systems are not only at the heart of a secure and sustainable energy system, they also contribute to network stabilization. Here, we rely on tried and tested technologies such as battery and thermal storage but simultaneously develop innovative solutions like hydrogen storage. NRW has the ideal conditions for these innovations: Together with companies, research institutions, and civil society, we aim to accelerate the expansion of these key technologies. Our energy storage concept shows how we can connect supply security and climate protection. Our goal is clear: NRW should become the first climate-neutral industrial region in Europe, setting an example for other regions."

The NRW energy storage concept evolved through an extensive dialogue process, taking into account the expertise from the economy, science, and civil society.
