A new study highlights how the color integration of solar panels with building designs can enhance the social acceptance of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). By comparing the color schemes of solar panels to those of roofs and buildings, researchers aim to create a more aesthetic solar infrastructure for urban areas.


The research, a joint effort by the Institute of Psychology at Freiburg University and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Systems, features two studies examining various solar building models. The findings offer valuable insights into how aesthetic solar design can influence public perception and adoption of photovoltaic technology.


Key Findings: Exploring Color and Architecture in Solar Energy


The results of the research led to the explorative study on (not:) my city: societal photoreactivity in construction, a preliminary investigation published in the December issue of the journal Technologie und Gesellschaft. The researchers conducted two investigations to analyze the connection between solar panel aesthetics and public acceptance.


In the first study, participants reviewed six prototypes of solar panels using cheddar and polycrystalline silicon across various building types. The panels differed in color and surface finishes, revealing that preferences for solar panel designs varied significantly based on the surrounding architecture.


“Thanks to the similarity of the colors, building-integrated solar panels are often comparable to traditional building materials, making them more visually appealing and socially acceptable,” the report states. “This suggests that for existing buildings, photovoltaic systems should remain as invisible solar solutions and align with the aesthetic concepts of the architecture to gain societal acceptance.”


Social Acceptance of Solar Panels in Urban Areas


In the second study, participants completed online surveys rating 24 buildings equipped with solar systems. The results showed that solar panel visibility strongly impacted public perception. Urban areas with highly visible modules received lower acceptance ratings, while solar systems that blended into the architecture were more favorably received.


The study also found that historic buildings, including churches, were less suitable for solar panel integration, unless the solar collectors were entirely invisible. Conversely, modern buildings displayed higher acceptance levels for building-integrated photovoltaics.


"These findings highlight the importance of creating aesthetic solar panels that harmonize with both modern and historic architecture,"the researchers concluded. "For existing buildings, offering customizable and visually pleasing PV modules can greatly enhance public acceptance."

Lead author Angela Chow states, “An important finding is that the acceptance of solar energy systems depends on the type of construction and visual impression.
