Germany and the UK: Pioneering Battery Energy Storage Expansion in Europe

2025-03-31
Germany and the UK are leading Europe’s battery energy storage expansion, driving growth with innovative solutions for a sustainable energy future.

Even in the face of the so-called 'Dunkelflaute' and the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Germany has continued valiantly with the 'Energiewende'. Crucial in this transition to greener energy is the potential to securely store these renewable sources. Reports from Energy Storage News indicate that Germany, alongside the United Kingdom, is spearheading Europe's surge in battery energy storage systems (BESS) deployment.

A recent publication from ‘Rabobank’ - a Dutch multinational banking and financial services company - titled "Europe's Back-Up Power: Part 1 - Identifying Promising BESS Markets", pointed out that the most appealing markets for BESS currently are the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy.

Straits Research, an esteemed Indian research institute, predicts in its report titled "Global Market Prospects for Energy Storage Systems - Forecasts till 2033" an impressive 8.2% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for Europe. The continent's ambitious goals for clean energy and its commitment to a more sustainable, less carbon-intensive energy landscape are driving factors for this expected growth.

Furthermore, the evolution and modernisation of Europe's energy infrastructure are also playing a significant role in this transition. Issues such as an aging grid system, electrifying industries like transportation, and the pressing need for more flexible energy solutions have sparked a surge in energy storage demand across Europe. The rising challenge of curtailing solar energy is the driving force behind the adoption of co-located energy storage solutions. These aim to alleviate revenue loss, bolster grid stability and enhance energy dispatch, making this approach increasingly appealing for optimising the value of renewable energy assets.

The scale of typical, grid-connected BESS in Europe is seeing significant growth, with unit sizes expanding from the customary 30 MW/30 MWh to mammoth 500 MW BESS installations in some cases. The European Union's new scheme, named "Clean Industrial Deal and Affordable Energy Action Plan", intends to inject a minimum of €100 billion into industry enhancement. This fund aims to accelerate the production and deployment of renewable energy and energy storage, pointing towards a bright future for the sector.
