The prestigious circle of power producers under the umbrella of the China Energy Storage Alliance (CNESA) has shared noteworthy statistics from its 2024 Energy Storage account. The data illustrates the total installed energy storage capacity of an impressive 137.9GW, indicating a robust increase of 59.9% compared to the previous year.
The radical change worth noting was the dominance of non-hydro energy storage, boasting a 78.3GW capacity, which outshone its pumped hydro storage counterpart for the first time in recorded history. As per the alliance's records, a relatively lower 58.5GW of pumped hydro storage was installed during the same period.
Furthermore, the installed capacity of non-hydro energy storage vastly developed in China, extending to 43.7GW for the year, marking a yearly doubling effect.
Interestingly, December emerged as the definitive powerhouse month, with total installations reaching the peak at 13.0GW.
Concerning energy storing duration, projects with the potential to conserve energy for a 2–4-hour duration secured the top spot on the most-installed list. However, longer-lasting projects with a duration span extending beyond 4 hours were not far behind, presenting a substantial yearly increase of 45%.
Operational projects mainly composed of those capable of delivering 10MW or less, with them comprising 64% of the total. However, planned or underbuild projects showcase a capacity between 100–500MW.
The alliance proudly announced that over 180 colossal projects with a 100MW storage capacity were initiated and turned operational within 2024.
When assessing the provincial performance, each of the top 10 provinces succeeded in exceeding an installed capacity of 1GWh. Xinjiang and Jiangsu emerged as the frontrunners, outclassing others in energy and power scale.
Battery manufacturers were fortunate to secure overseas orders surpassing 100GWh. Additionally, a noteworthy order volume of over 30GWh was achieved by the photovoltaic and energy storage players in the same year.
The orders comprised of:
Lastly, China registered a significant achievement in 2024, deploying mega-orders adding up to 150GWh for international projects, based on the data currently available.
